Things I watched during my 12 hours of flying [WARNING: SCORTCHING HOT TAKES WITHIN]

Kinja'd!!!1 Kinja'd!!! 12

Delta wielded an old but trusty 757 to carries my buns to that one place I went to that one time. They also gave me a tiny screen and lots of stuff to watch.

[These are not ordered in any meaningful way]

Kinja'd!!!

1. Black Panther

Verdict: a good ol’ formulaic Marvel superhero movie, which is something I always seem to enjoy. M’baatu should probably get his own vegetarian cooking show. All the buzz about the “controversy” was clearly overhyped. I can guess who are the kind of people that couldn’t handle being reminded of, um you know, things that actually happened in our world’s history.

Kinja'd!!!

2. The Last Jedi

Verdict: I thought it was kind of... um... bad. There, I said it.

[Audible gasps]

MOVING ON...

3. Simpsons - Season 29

I’m I hater of most things pertaining to post-911 Simpsons, but the two episodes I saw here we’re almost an improvement compared to say 7 years ago if that means anything (no). One was where Marge became mayor (it was kind of like a worse version of when Lois became mayor on Family Guy?), and the second was the revival of the Pin Palls. I can’t seem to remember one joke from that one but I did finish the episode so that’s something.

4. Bob’s Burgers

Laughed at first but then quickly lost steam. It was the Valentine’s one where the daughter didn’t get asked out by her crush or something. Midway though, I switched to something else. Maybe I bailed too soon, but this was into my 11th hour in the air, I had no pateince left. I don’t fault the show.

5. Robot Chicken - newer stuff

Somehow more vulger and irreverent than I remember... So I watched all the episodes they had on zee plane, because it’s like fast food: bad but satisfying.

6. Rick and Morty

Speaking of vulgarity: how ‘bout this show? First episodes I’ve ever watched (did you know I live under a rock?). It was the memetic Szechuan sauce one, followed by the Mad Max spoof. I laughed and I laughed bigly, to the point that I was covering my mouth with both hands to surpress actual joy on a plane, full of presumably miserable people.

Kinja'd!!!

7. Pitch Perfect 3

Watched four minutes and I was like, “I’m out.” Maybe watching the other two would have helped? I read that it had John Lithgow in it, but I just couldn’t tough it out :(

Aaaaand I’m done.

I also disliked TLJ, and that’s based only on its merits as a movie, nothing to do with whiny fanboy reasons like being upset that Luke is now grumpy, or male chauvinist reasons like there were too many female characters with actual dialogue.

My thoughts similarly.

You’re allowed to be wrong about The Last Jedi.

My issue with the “controversy” in Black Panther was mostly that it felt like it was forced in there. I mean, the main guy complaining about his ancestors jumping off ships because it was better than slavery? Yeah, that guy was Wakandan, which we’re led to believe were not subject to such things for, like, the entire movie. So it wasn’t his direct ancestors. I get that Killmonger was feeling the issues that the US people he grew up with felt, perhaps adopting the culture and history, but it still felt out of place to me. Lore break, I guess. Movie was good, though.

Nice...the last time I flew on a plane with screens was 2008 and the screens were in the ceiling every 6-7 rows. 767, IIRC.

My father in law had never seen “Everybody Hates Chris” before and laughed so loudly, it was embarassing.

This was back when you all had to watch the same thing, no matter what.

I had that thought too, which clashed with my thoughts on the characters themselves and how good they were all throughout the movie. Almost all of them I loved to varying degrees, but in the end, I was invested in them more so than after Ep7. I wanted to see where they will go from the end of the film, how their interactions and motivations will evolve. Parts of me became parts of the characters, particularly Kylo Ren (Adam Driver is the MVP of the cast, hands-down). And don’t get me started on the technical aspects, which ruled.

The best ingredients on a bad recipe make for a strange dish that leaves a weird taste in the mouth. That’s my take after a few rewatches.

To Mark Hamil’s credit, he said he disagreed with everything they had his character do.

Last time I got to watch a personal movie in flight, I watched Deadpool, which I wouldn’t get to watch with family around. Before that, I watched Miss Peregrine’s... which I never did finish because the plane landed. Got to finish that someday.

This is accurate.

Last jedi I feel like was similar to black panther. I knew I was getting a star wars movie and I had little hope for anything else. the cantobite (spelling) scene was still stupid and bad.
